Opuntia species (prickly pear cacti)

Our involvement with the South American cactus moth (Cactoblastis cactorum) has resulted in considerable expansion of what we know about the taxonomy and distribution of prickly pear cacti in the southeastern United States.

Studies conducted by former M.S. student, Lucas Majure, revealed the presence of at least two new species of Opuntia in Mississippi. Lucas has continued his work through doctoral studies at the University of Florida, where he is conducting a comprehensive re-examination of the genus Opuntia.
